Custom Software vs. Off the Shelf—The Scarpetta Group, Inc.

CUSTOM SOFTWARE VS OFF THE SHELF. This is the decision a FileMaker development firm has to help prospective clients with repeatedly.  Taking the leap to go custom is not easy for most.  They may realize the need for custom software, but they aren’t prepared to address the complexity of the issue:

Ok, so you’ve decided to build a custom application. Now you have to think about the following:

  • Who do you call?
  • What platform do you want?
  • What is the cost?
  • What is my budget? (Keep in mind, software development and support.)
  • Do I hire a company or a consultant?
  • How long will a custom application take to develop?

More and more questions come up at this stage and can make building almost seem overwhelming. These questions could take several blogs to answer, so let me stay focused.

In the end, the goal is to create a highly customized solution to run your business your way and efficiently. Cost will certainly be higher, but it comes as a benefit to a capitol investment to your company. Development will take time, but this can be planned for.

Our job as developers is to help our clients make the right decisions at each point in the process and help guide them through what promises to be a long and sometimes difficult cycle.  To do so successfully requires getting the successful cooperation and feedback of all the players (end users, managers, owners) while building the software solution they need.  Not always an easy task.  I look forward to more on this subject from Joe Scarpetta.
