FileMaker Navigation Parts

FileMaker 14 has plenty of new features, and I thought I knew all the major (and a lot of the minor) ones.  But one completely escaped my attention until I read about it on Weetbicks (Digital Fusion’s blog page: Navigation Parts.

Navigation Parts are a brand layout feature with the following characteristics:

  • There is a top part and a bottom part, and you can use one or both independently
  • Navigation Parts do not print
  • Navigation Parts stay fixed to the top (or bottom) as you scroll in Find, Layout, and Browse modes
  • Navigation Parts are not visible in Preview mode
  • Navigation Parts may be used in Table Mode
  • Navigation Parts have a nice animation effect in FileMaker Go
  • Navigation Parts do not zoom

Daniel Wood has much more to add:

…When in form view (or any view for that matter) navigation parts remain fixed to the top and bottom of the screen.  Headers and Footers on the other hand do not remain fixed. They remain fixed in list and table views but scroll in form view.

So why does this matter? Well, it opens the doors for us to build sweet layouts that are scrollable, whilst not losing our top/bottom navigation.  FileMaker developers have always been sticklers for putting everything on screen and avoiding scrolling anything that isn’t a list layout.

Check out his post for more details and a downloadable example file.
