FileMaker UX and UI. And What is GDPR?

FileMaker UX and UI with Semantic UI

Humming Tech is pushing the boundaries of the FileMaker User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) recently, and their latest effort is no exception.  This time it is a video tutorial (with a Free FileMaker Example File) on integrating features from the free Semantic UI development framework:

Semantic is a development framework that helps create beautiful, responsive layouts using human-friendly HTML…

Simply put, Semantic framework is an easy to use tool that allows the user to more easily build a website.  Watch to see how Semantic is, rather easily, integrates animated button into the FileMaker interface:

One caveat

Your users will need an active internet connection for the animations to work – at least at this point.  Perhaps an enterprising reader can find a work around.  What does that mean?  If your solution lose their internet connection, you need a way to test for an active internet connection and write code to show alternative buttons should that be the case.

What is the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

GDPR is an European Union regulation that impacts almost anyone using a computer technology that impacts EU members.  It’s a pretty broad definition and the penalties for non compliance can affect you wherever you live (in theory – the practical methods for enforcing outside the EU are not very clear). Essentially, that means if you develop a database in the US that is used by people in the EU, this regulation is something  you need to know about.  And, as is normal with most overbearing government regulations, the actual implementation of the regulations is pretty muddled and unclear for just about everyone.  Rather than dig into the details here, I have provided some links for more information:

I hope this helps clear the fog a little bit.

Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys.
