JSON Help from Kevin Frank, Jordon Peterson

JSON Help

Kevin Frank, of FileMakerHacks.com fame, posted part 1 of a new series about JSON, Thinking About JSON. His post explains the basics of JSON from basics to pretty advanced, and includes a free FileMaker Example file, json-sandbox.fmp12, as well.

I’ve been working on a couple large JSON projects over the last few months, and with the one year anniversary of FileMaker having built-in JSON capabilities just around the corner, this seems an opportune moment to share some reflections and opinions (some of which may contradict JSON-related opinions I have expressed previously).

The deep dive includes a look at the basic JSON rules, how the rules apply within the FileMaker framework, and how to use the FileMaker tools to retrieve JSON objects and arrays from a variety of different JSON objects.

Why would you want to know this?  As a developer, you’ll find knowing how to work with JSON will open a whole new world of access for you and your clients.  And working with arrays in JSON will bleed over into working with FileMaker cURL.

JSON and cURL

I recently connected to a brand new API for an online service that just went live.  Every example provided in the API used PHP code for examples.  Embedded in the code were calls to cURL with arrays and embedded arrays.  I spent some time trying to generate a FMP URL request using Generator (a great free file from Todd Geist) without luck.  I finally dug into FileMaker cURL and found the solutions very quickly using array notation found in JSON.  I’ll be writing a post on that experience soon.

At any rate, Frank’s post is a must read if you want to learn about JSON.

Dr. Jordon Peterson

Dr. Jordon Peterson is a Canadian clinical psychologist and professor at the University of Toronto Professor of Psychology.  He is also a YouTube star (his real channel) and a controversial speaker/guest on a wide variety of subjects.  I like him for a couple of reasons: he makes thoughtful, reasoned statements based on his experiences and research, and he is pretty much unflappable.  Whether you agree with him or not, he is an incredibly deep thinker and will stimulate you to do so, as well.

Here is a short selection of links that illustrate the diverse topics he tackles:

The Neuroscience of Intelligence: Dr. Richard Haier

Modern Times: Camille Paglia & Jordan B Peterson

Jordan Peterson – Advice for People for Depression

I’ve learned a lot listening to him.  I hope you do, too.
