Nicholas Orr presents BaseElements, BE Plugin, and James Clear on Self Improvement

BaseElements by Nicholas Orr

Kudos to  of Blue Feather for getting Nick Orr to do a livestream presentation on BaseElements, the FileMaker database analyzer program.  Not to be confused with the free Base Elements plugin used by so many developers.

Nicholas Orr from Goya presented at our developer meeting this month. Watch the recording of the live-stream to see him demonstrate BaseElements and give a run down on the benefits of developer analysis tools in general, and BaseElements in particular.  He’ll show you how to get the best solution possible from FileMaker using these tools, as well a quick demo of their update builder product : RefreshFM, Web Services server : RESTfm and the free BaseElements plugin.

Orr dissects a massive database using BaseElements, making it look easy to find and fix problems with what looks like an unsolvable mess.

Self Improvement Tips Based on Science

James Clear writes about self improvement on his blog, and I’ve found his blog very useful for practical ways to work on improving myself.  He posted about his top ten articles at year end 2016, and all are worth a read:

  1. Make Your Life Better by Saying Thank You in These 7 Situations
  2. The Evolution of Anxiety: Why We Worry and What to Do About It
  3. The Akrasia Effect: Why We Don’t Follow Through on What We Set Out to Do and What to Do About It
  4. The Downside of Work-Life Balance
  5. Motivation is Overvalued. Environment Often Matters More.
  6. The 3 Stages of Failure in Life and Work (And How to Fix Them)
  7. Motivation: The Scientific Guide on How to Get and Stay Motivated
  8. The Science of Sleep: A Brief Guide on How to Sleep Better Every Night
  9. Healthy Eating: The Beginner’s Guide on How to Eat Healthy and Stick to It
  10. The Proven Path to Doing Unique and Meaningful Work

My favorite is number 8, The Science of Sleep.  Finding out how lack of sleep affects your performance was a real eye opener.  I had been proud of getting by on less than 6 hours of sleep until I read this:

Let me repeat that: if you get 6 hours of sleep per night for two weeks straight, your mental and physical performance declines to the same level as if you had stayed awake for 48 hours straight.

Ouch.  Since then I’ve worked hard at improving my sleep.  Most nights I now get 7-8 hours, and life is definitely better.

I highly recommend reading everything James writes.
