WebDirect on Android

As many of you know, FileMaker Server 15 now supports using WebDirect on the Android operating system. Calvin Cooper of Skeleton Key worked through some of the difficulties of displaying Filemaker WebDirect on Android screens and shares some hard earned knowledge that make it easier for you to design layouts:

With the release of FileMaker 15 Server the Chrome browser on the Android operating system is now supported for use with FileMaker 15 WebDirect when using devices with a five inch or larger screen. I have spent some time testing this out and I’ve found that things seem to work as well as it does on the other platforms. However, during my testing I did come across something I found to be a bit odd and not quite as intuitive due to the variety of Android screen sizes and resolutions.iOS has historically used whole number multipliers to scale to the native screen resolution.

Using either a 2x or 3x multiplier they can scale the output resolution to the native screen resolution and keep all elements of the items large and legible on the device screens.

Cooper also includes a very handy link to calculate the usable screen size for a given device:

To make calculating the screen size even simpler I have created a simple utility that will calculate the usable space available for your device. This Javascript based utility uses the formulas above to determine the usable space for your device. To use this tool simply navigate to the link below from your target device and view the results!

How do you deal with negative people?  How do you handle rejection (after rejection, after rejection)?

Do you ever lose faith in yourself and what you do?

Do you have trouble keeping yourself on your chosen path?  What do you do when life keeps knocking you down?

One great answer:  Try listening to Les Brown, a master motivational speaker.

Motivation is like food and water. To be successful, you need consume some every single day, especially on those days and at those times when it is hardest to get going, and easiest to give up.

I like trying to figure out how and why certain things just take off.

The latest game to take the world by storm is Pokéman Go:

On July 8th, only 2 days after the app’s release, it was already installed on 5.16% of all Android devices in the US. If that doesn’t seem like much, consider that by Thursday, July 7th, Pokemon GO was already installed on more US Android phones than Tinder.

Now that’s impressive.

Pokémon GO: The Data Behind America’s Latest Obsession

If you haven’t checked it out, it uses some pretty amazing programming to get people to move out and about to track down Pokéman:

With its augmented reality platform, Pokémon have been appearing everywhere across America from rivers and lakes to hospital rooms, and users of the app have spent all weekend trying to catch new Pokémon and train them to be the very best.

One thing I do like:  Pokéman provides an incentive to be active and to move, rather than sit while playing a game.  Not bad.  But pay attention to your surroundings:

Pokémon Go warns players to keep aware of their surroundings during their virtual treasure hunt, but after only a few days since its release it has already led people into a string of bizarre incidents. People have ended up in hospitals after chasing nonexistent animals into hazardous spots, and schools, a state agency and Australian police have warned people not to break the law or endanger themselves while “Pokemoning”. The game has also led wanderers to at least one home misidentified as a church, a venue the app considers a public space.

And there is one other upside:

Shares in Japan’s Nintendo Co Ltd (7974.T) soared again on Monday, bringing market-value gains to $7.5 billion in just two days as investors cheered the runaway success of Pokemon GO – its first long-awaited venture in mobile gaming.

Wish I’d seen this coming and invested in Nintendo…maybe next time.

It could probably be shown by facts and figures that there is no distinctly American criminal class except Congress.
