Relationship Graph Changes in FileMaker 13

FileMaker 13 includes some interesting changes to the relationship window that you may not be aware of:

  • Multiple levels of undo/redo
  • It can be zoomed to greater than 100%
  • Holding down the Control key (Windows) or the Command key (Mac) will select items you specifically drag over instead of selecting all items your drag area touches

Some changes made to the Relationship Graph Editor (File menu > Manage > Database.. > Relationships tab) in FileMaker Pro 13 include:

  1. Drag selection behavior and appearanceThe rubber-band selection behavior now matches the updated marquee selection appearance and behavior of Layout Mode.Like Layout Mode, holding down the Command key (on Mac) or the Control key (on Windows) immediately switches to selection by containment instead of intersection; in this alternate (select-by-containment) mode, the selection area is drawn with a darkened translucent fill instead of the translucent white fill in the normal (select-by-intersection) mode.
  2. The Relationship Graph can now be zoomed in greater than 100%
  3. Multiple undo/redoCertain operations in the Relationships Graph support multiple levels of undo/redo.  These include:
  • Moving, resizing, changing background color, and cycling the collapse state of table occurrence and text note objects.
  • Creation and deletion of graph objects.
  • Creation and deletion of relationship links.
    • Note that creating a new relationship clears the undo/redo stack up until that point before leaving an undoable relationship-addition operation on the stack.

One feature I’d love to see would be a search function inside of the relationship window.  I have, very recently, had to search through a jungle of table occurrences to find one I know existed.  A search function would have saved a lot of time.

One more thing–these features don’t always apply under all circumstances. Read the whole article for details.
